PRETORIA - Police Minister Fikile Mbalula says he has established a good working relationship with Acting National Commissioner Khomotso Phahlane, whom he has praised for his professionalism.
He made the comments at a briefing in Pretoria on Thursday where he appointed the unit’s deputy commissioner Yolisa Matakata to act as head until further notice.
The high court in Pretoria ruled this week that Berning Ntlemeza may no longer hold the post because of an earlier ruling that he lacked integrity.
Mbalula says he has a good relationship with Phahlane.
“We’re not friends… we’re maintaining a professional relationship. He’s been a professional policeman and he’s never done anything to doubt him.”
Mbalula says he’s satisfied with police management in general.
“We’re focused on the task at hand in terms of fixing what need to be fixed in the police.”
The minister says he still having extensive meetings with police leadership to plot the way forward.
Mbalula tasked Matakata with getting the unit back to focusing on its core mandate of tackling corruption.
Mbalula says the Hawks strategy is clear - reduce corruption.
“This means we must deal with those who are busy perpetrating corruption.”
He says the Hawks must act fearlessly.
“We must lock up corrupt individuals in the public and private sector.”
Lieutenant general Matakata says she will not allow the unit to be drawn into politics.
