JOHANNESBURG - The Mpumalanga Health Department says it will conduct a post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death of a 14-year-old pupil who was assaulted at a Middelburg school allegedly by the principal.

Siphamandla Choma was beaten up late last year allegedly for stealing R150.

The teenager was paralysed as a result of the assault and he died on Sunday night.

The Health Department’s Dumisani Malamulele says Choma was a patient at the Middelburg Hospital following his assault last year.

“As the department, we are going to conduct a post-mortem to determine the real cause of death of the pupil.”

The Education Department’s Jasper Zwane says a delegation from the province will be visiting the family on Tuesday.

“We want to take this opportunity to convey our sincere condolences to the family and to the school. The MEC for Education will visit the family tomorrow at 10am.”

The principal involved has since been suspended and a disciplinary hearing is underway.
