Report: Durban loses out on chance to host 2022 Games
The coastal city was awarded the Games in 2015 as the only contender to make a confirmed bid.
JOHANNESBURG - The BBC is reporting that the 2022 Commonwealth Games will no longer take place in Durban.
The coastal city was awarded the Games in 2015, as the only contender to make a confirmed bid.
Last month, Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula indicated the city may not be able to host the event because of financial constraints.
According to the BBC an official announcement about pulling out is expected later.
Sports officials have not been available for comment.
Concerns were raised around the funding of the event when the sports minister admitted the government could not agree with the Commonwealth Games Federation on the operational budget.
The current budget allocated for the games stands at R4.6 billion.
