Situation hots up in #PrincessProtest
Roads have been barricaded with burning tyres and a truck set on fire on Main Reef Road during a protest by residents in the Princess informal settlement.
JOHANNESBURG – Demonstrators at the Princess informal settlement, near Krugersdorp, have looted and set a fruit and vegetable truck on fire.
Protesters say they are tired of government's empty promises, and have blocked off Main Reef Road with rocks and burning tyres.
The protests started last night, but ended when police stepped in.
The fruit and vegetable truck was first looted and then set on fire on Main Reef road in Roodepoort.
The truck driver says residents attacked and accessed the truck before he could react.
“I tried to escape, and they had already taken my things and got inside my truck. They beat me with stones.”
Police have used rubber bullets and stun grenades to disperse the angry crowd.
The officers are now searching the shacks to retrieve stolen goods.
