SA govt steers clear of couple's arrest in Dubai over pregnancy out of wedlock
The couple was arrested on Tuesday in Abu Dhabi; sex before marriage in the region is illegal.
JOHANNESBURG - The International Relations Department says the process behind the arrest of a South African man and his Ukrainian fiancé in Dubai is now in the hands of United Arab Emirates authorities.
The couple was arrested on Tuesday in Abu Dhabi when it was found the woman was pregnant out of wedlock.
Sex before marriage in the region is illegal.
It’s believed the woman was feeling ill and went to a medical centre, where the doctor found she was pregnant, and reported her to police.
Department’s Nelson Kgwete says the South African embassy in Abu Dhabi and the department are not in a position to interfere in the legal process.
“As they are implementing a decision relating to the enforcement of their own law, they are a sovereign state with a right to prosecute offences that seem to be criminal in their jurisdiction.”
