JOHANNESBURG – A 76-year-old man has committed suicide at a municipal building in Pretoria, using fireworks.

The man was summoned to attend a protection order case in Visagie Street on Monday morning.

Witnesses say that while waiting for the case to start, the elderly man put something in his mouth and set it alight.
The man was declared dead on the scene.

Tshwane Metro Police's Isaac Mahamba explains: “We don’t want to pre-empt where he got it from but we suspect that he brought the fireworks with him. What we are investigating at this stage is that he could have tampered with the fireworks to make sure it had enough explosives in them.”

The municipal court has been closed for the day.
