Eskom denies nuclear programme will displace renewable energy
The utility has dismissed claims that it is “displacing” renewable energy sources by embarking on the planned nuclear programme.
The utility has announced it will be launching its request for information on the project on Thursday.
Two environmental groups are challenging the legality of the programme in court. Their case has been postponed to February.
Eskom's Khulu Phasiwe says: “There’s been reports that Eskom is pursuing nuclear energy because we want to displace our renewable energy. That’s not correct. The policy of the government is to have nuclear, coal and renewable energy, including biomass and gas, all of them into our energy mix.”
