JOHANNESBURG - The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) says its received more than 300,000 applications from students who need financial assistance in 2017.

Tuesday marked the deadline for those who wanted to apply for financial assistance for university and FET colleges.

The financial aid scheme says it’s online application portal experienced higher volumes than expected.

It says it will now start the process of assessing and awarding funding to deserving students.

Spokesperson Kagisho Mamabolo said: “The National Student Financial Aid Scheme received more than 380,000 applications for 2017 financial aid for TVET and university students since the new centralised application period opened on 1 August 2016.”

Student funding has formed the heart of the #FeesMustFall demonstrations that have erupted throughout the country over the past two years.
