WITS University ranked best in Africa
Wits is now ranked 203 in the 201 to 300 category in the world ranking.
JOHANNESBURG - Wits University has made it to the top position in Africa in the 2016 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by Shanghai Ranking.
The institution has been ranked at 203 out of 500 universities around the world because of its increasing research output.
Four other institutions including the University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch University and the University of KwaZulu-Natal are on the list.
Last month, Wits was ranked the best in the country according to another world ranking.
The university's Mohammed Moola says, "We are quite happy that we are regarded as the best university in Africa, but we also say that you have got to take this in the context in which it comes because various rankings use different criteria for their ranking purposes."

ARWU has also ranked Wits in the Top 200 in the world in the field of Social Sciences.
Professor Zeblon Vilakazi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research at Wits says, "At Wits, our research output has increases substantially in the last few years. Noting though that this achievement is a culmination of work done over many years by our researchers. We are truly appreciative of this recognition, and we are particularly appreciative of our researchers, scientists, students and alumni to whom these accolades really belong,"
Vilakazi commended universities that have also been ranked among the top 500 in the world in the, saying it clearly demonstrates the strength of the South African higher education system.
