SA detainee held in Egypt released

Sheikh Abdul Salam Jad Bassiouni from Lenasia was freed from a police station in Egypt this morning.

JOHANNESBURG – A South African man who was held in Egypt on suspicion of being part of the Muslim Brotherhood, has been released after more than a year in custody. 

Sheikh Abdul Salam Jad Bassiouni from Lenasia was freed from a police station in Egypt this morning. 

He was arrested along with his son by the country's national security at Cairo Airport in December 2014.

His son Bilal, who was released, says the family is happy his father has been freed.

“My father is officially released. He is on his way home with the family.”
