Eskom embarks on maintenance festival

Eskom has taken a number of units offline for maintenance purposes this long weekend.

Eskom's chairperson Zola Tsotsi revealed the power utility will be suspending four executives as part of an independent inquiry into the business at Megawatt Park in Johannesburg on 12 March 2015. Picture: Reinart Toerien/EWN

JOHANNESBURG - Eskom says 10,000 megawatts of power have been temporarily suspended and will be switched back on gradually from Tuesday.

The power supplier says they have taken a number of units offline for maintenance purposes this long weekend.

The utility has embarked on what is called a maintenance festival which happens over long weekends due to high volumes of people travelling away from the city.

Eskom’s Khulu Phasiwe says they are aware of various areas in Johannesburg experiencing power outages, but says it's not due to load shedding.

“I know City Power has issued notices of power outages in some of those particular areas because of technical faults in some of the substations, but it’s not load shedding. The specific municipalities should be able to say what the issues are.”
