CAPE TOWN – Democratic Alliance (DA) leader in the Eastern Cape Athol Trollip has denied claims he bribed a party councillor to spy on a senior member.

It’s been reported Trollip allegedly offered R5,000 to the councillor to “dig up some dirt” on DA provincial chairperson Veliswa Mvenya.

The pair has had a rocky relationship since Mvenya’s election as chairperson in 2014.

She has refused to speak on the matter, saying she’ll request an investigation by the party’s federal structures.

Trollip is the DA’s mayoral candidate for the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.

He says the claims are false and plans to take action.

“I said to the journalist, with regards to the first three questions about the allegations of bribery, that I deny them categorically and if the journalist prints those allegations without verifying the facts then I will sue their publication. I have done that. We’ve instructed out attorneys to sue.”
