Pikitup trucks shot at during overnight shift
It is believed that striking workers are behind the shooting in Nasrec.
JOHANNESBURG Johannesburg Mayor Parks Tau has condemned the shooting of two Pikitup trucks near Nasrec.
No one was injured during the shooting which happened on Rand Road during an overnight shift.
Workers picking up the rubbish are part of the City of Johannesburgs contingency plan to ensure refuse is removed while Pikitup employees continue an unprotected strike.
Tau's spokesperson Phindile Chauke says they believe the striking workers are behind the shooting.
We do believe it was the striking workers because weve had direct complaints of intimidation by the workers. We have seen them damage the city property and empty dustbins into the streets.
Earlier this week, workers threw rubbish onto the streets and overturned bins in the CBD.
They have been protesting for over four months over wages and allegations of misconduct against managing director Amanda Nair.
In the suburbs, the situation is also dire, overflowing and uncollected bins line the streets causing a health hazard.
