Buffalo City blows millions on ‘ghost events’
The DA has accused the municipality of spending close to R2.1million on events that never happened.
JOHANNESBURG - The Buffalo City Municipality in the Eastern Cape has been accused of paying more than R2 million for "ghost" events that have never taken place.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) says one these events include an 'egg and spoon' race, which cost R250,000.
The DA's Kevin Mileham says there are a number of sports tournaments, funded by the Buffalo City Municipality, which have allegedly never taken place.
"These include an alleged egg and spoon race, tug of war, bucket race for which the municipality sponsored R250,000."
Mileham says the ghost events amount to R2.1million.
Buffalo City's head of events, Phumla Nazo, has referred media queries to the mayor's office.
Mayoral spokesperson Thandy Matebese has been unavailable for comment.
