Man arrested for assaulting Baviaans Municipality mayor
The man attacked Mayor Ewald Loock during a protest by Samwu-affiliated workers which began on Monday.
JOHANNESBURG - Police have arrested a man for attempted murder after he allegedly attacked the mayor of an Eastern Cape town.
Baviaans Municipality mayor Ewald Loock was assaulted while trying to address a crowd of protesters this morning.
About 300 municipal workers affiliated to the South African Municipal Workers Union have been protesting in Willowmore since Monday.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson Ernest Sigobe says, "The mayor tried to address them, and he was attacked by a 47-year-old male with a knobkerrie. Subsequent to that, the guy was detained at Willowmoore. He will be facing an attempted murder case, as well as public violence."
