DA to press charges over Gupta/Jonas debacle
The party has announced that Mmusi Maimane will lay charges against the Gupta family.
JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) says it will press charges against the Guptas tomorrow for the numerous instances where the family have been accused of trying to influence the state.
This comes after Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas confirmed reports that the family offered him the job of finance minister, shortly before President Jacob Zuma gave Nhlanhla Nene the boot.
Jonas says he rejected the offer, and also dismissed reports that African National Congress(ANC) Secretary General Jessie Duarte, phoned him to encourage him to accept the the Gupta's proposal.
The family has denied ever making to the deputy finance minister, calling his utterances part of political point scoring, between rival ANC factions.
DA leader Mmusi Maimane will lay charges against the family in terms of Section Four of the Prevention and Combatting of Corrupt Activities Act.
Spokesperson Mabine Seabe says, "The revelation by the deputy minister confirms what many South Africans have suspected; that the Gupta family has undue influence on President Jacob Zuma as well as affairs of the State that they should not be involved in."
