Gomorrah informal settlement residents are demanding basic services like water, electricity & proper houses.
PRETORIA Tshwane municipal officials are now negotiating with a group of informal settlement residents who have barricaded roads with burning debris near Daspoort, west of Pretoria.
The Daspoort tunnel as well as Vom Hagen and Bremer streets have been blocked off by police who have warned motorists not to enter the area.
The community is demanding services including electricity and water as well as proper houses.
Several piles of debris, which includes tractor tyres and large tree stumps are still smouldering at the intersection of Vom Hagen and Bremer streets.
A group of about 200 people from the nearby Gomorrah informal settlement are demanding better services from the municipality.
Police and Tshwane Metro Police are keeping a close eye on the situation while an air wing helicopter has been hovering overhead.
While there were earlier reports of schools in the area being vandalised, police say this has not been confirmed.
The municipality has sent an official to negotiate with the group.
