JOHANNESBURG – The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says its decision to apply for the provisional withdrawal of rape charges against one of Nelson Mandela’s grandsons was made with the best interests of the alleged victim in mind.

The 25-year-old rape accused is now a free man after several court appearances last year.

He claims he had consensual sex with the teenager who led him to believe she was 18-years-old.

The NPA says new information has emerged, which affects its ability to move forward with the case at present.

During previous court appearances it was alleged the man raped the then 15-year-old girl inside the restroom of a popular Greenside restaurant.

But a witness account given by a chef at the restaurant supports claims by the former accused that the sex was consensual.
