200 sheep dead in N1 accident
A truck overturned during the early hours of this morning.
JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng police say a truck driver has escaped without injuries in an accident after his truck overturned on the N1 near Vanderbijlpark, killing at least 200 sheep.
The truck was carrying 800 animals and travelling from the Eastern Cape in the early hours of this morning.
Spokesperson Simon Mofokotsane says, "We found that the truck had [overturned] and 200 sheep died. The driver was not injured and the rest of the sheep were taken to a nearby farm."
Meanwhile the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Vereeniging has threatened to take action against the company and owners of the animals.
The organisation claims the animals were left to suffer for almost three hours before it received an alert.
