Paarl Hospital in hot water after 4-year-old rape victim turned away
WC Health MEC Nomafrench Mbombo has called an urgent meeting with hospital officials.
CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Health MEC Nomafrench Mbombo said an urgent meeting has been called with officials at Paarl Hospital.
This after a four-year-old rape survivor and her mother were turned away from the hospital last week.
The department is investigating claims they were told to come back the next day because the child was not bleeding.
There are also claims the hospital gave the mother medication and an injection, without explaining how she should administer it.
The provincial health department's Luyanda Mfeka said, "From the ministry's perspective, in a country where rape and rape culture are particularly prevalent, we can't ourselves as government institutions, allow ourselves to become part of the problem and fail the most vulnerable members of our society who rely on us."
