JOHANNESBURG – Lyttelton police have confirmed they’re investigating an armed robbery in which a woman was stabbed several times while walking near the Gautrain station in Centurion at the weekend.

Joanne Atkins sustained deep stab wounds to her left arm while she and her attacker fought over her handbag a few meters from the train station.

Photos of her injuries have been spread on social media, sparking concerns about pedestrian safety in the area.

Atkins says she was walking from the Gautrain station to Centurion Mall on Saturday when she was attacked by a knife-wielding man on a public road.

“He wanted my bag and asked why he wanted it the he said if I don’t give him my bag he will stab me.”

Atkins says she shouted for help but claims no one wanted to assist her.

“I was saying ‘no, no and help, help’ but he kept telling me to ‘shh’.”

She has now been discharged from hospital and has reported the case to the police.
