Calls for Swallows CEO to step down

Godfrey Gxowa has told EWN Sport that in his 65-year involvement at the club, he’s never seen it this bad.

JOHANNESBURG – Former Soweto giant Moroka Swallows are staring down the barrel of relegation from the National First Division, just one season after being relegated from the PSL for the first time.

The once celebrated club has won only two matches and lost 14 out of 21 this season and lie at the bottom of the log with 11 points.

The club’s director Godfrey Gxowa has told EWN Sport that in his 65-year involvement at the club, he’s never seen it this bad.

“My interest in Moroka Swallows goes as far back as 1951 and I’ve seen the highest level of its performance, I’ve seen the lowest. But I’ve yet to see what is actually happening to the club today.”

Gxowa told EWN Sport that one of the club’s biggest problems has been a lack of continuity.

“You know when you win any knockout competition in the game, you try and nurture the team that won the trophy rather than discard it every time you win something and you sell players. We don’t have players in Swallows recently who can boast and say ‘I’ve played for Swallows for 15 years.’”

He said CEO Leon Prins is behind Swallows’ downfall and he has done nothing to bring change at the club.

“You know it’s saddens me when a man, who himself, has not been part of football throughout his life and has only come in 16 years ago and he’s still learning the ropes and when we offer to help, we didn’t offer to take over, we were offering to help and say please make us part of the system.”

He said Swallows wouldn’t be where it is today, if players were retained.

“Players that had brought us some part of glory for one season were discarded very quickly. If you look at the teams today, they all have players that have played at Swallows, the Ramahlwe Mphahlele of this world. He’s a player that came from our academy.”

Gxowa said Prins must step aside and let the directors save Swallows before it goes down to the second division.

“Prins must be big enough to say ‘Godfrey, you and the remaining shareholders please come over, I’m handing this thing over to you, please take it forward.' We’re not only running out of excuses, we’re running out of games and it’s time for him to go.”
