CAPE TOWN - A smash-and-grab suspect has been killed on Jakes Gerwel Drive after he was shot by a motorist.
It's understood the man was attempting a smash-and-grab when he was shot this afternoon.
The metro police's Yolanda Faro said, "The motorist shot the perpetrator and he was fatally wounded. She [the motorist] is receiving trauma counselling."
Faro said, "The motorists was located at the Mitchells Plain Police Station and we've got the police on the scene."
In December, City of Cape Town law enforcement official urged motorists to keep valuables out of sight when stopping at traffic lights in some of the City's dangerous smash-and-grab hotspots.
Parts of Jakes Gerwel Drive, Military Road in Steenberg, Stock Road and the R300 in Mitchells Plain were identified as some of the hotspots for such incidents.
At least 190 smash-and-grab incidents were reported on Jakes Gerwel Drive in the first nine months of 2015.
Editor's note: Earlier, following information from police, we reported that the motorist was male. This was incorrect and has been edited. We have clarified that the motorist was female. EWN apologises for the error.
