CAPE TOWN - Strong winds are fuelling a vegetation fire on the slopes of Tafelberg Road on the slopes of Table Mountain.

More than two dozen firefighters are battling the blaze which broke out a few hours ago.

Fire and Rescue Services' Theo Layne says it's still not clear what sparked the fire.

"The fire is still burning over a large area and it's being fanned by a strong south-easterly wind. There is a helicopter assisting the guys on the ground. The fire isn't contained yet and we have around 26 firefighters on the scene."

Layne also says no properties are in danger at the moment.
