Calls for Kannaland to be placed under administration
The Western Cape Legislature’s Standing Committee has asked Minister David van Rooyen to intervene.
CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Legislature's Standing Committee on Local Government said the Kannaland Municipality's executive has run it into the ground.
The committee will now ask Cooperative Governance Minister David van Rooyen and Provincial Local Government MEC, Anton Bredell, to place the municipality under administration.
The committee has accused Kannaland Municipality leadership of financial mismanagement and maladministration.
Committee chairperson Masizole Mnqasela said the current executive does not have the ability to turn the troubled municipality around.
"We've no confidence that if we give them more money, whether it comes from national, province or private sector, we've no confidence even in the fact that the billing systems are in order."
Mnqasela said in addition to the R12.7 million Eskom debt, the municipality owes millions to the Development Bank of Southern Africa.
He added the administration has been using money meant for the electricity bill to pay for other services.
