Lily Mine: Management, stakeholders discuss way forward
Rescue efforts have been suspended while three workers remain trapped in a metal container.
JOHANNESBURG - Mine management, Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union, and international geologists are currently locked in talks about how to proceed on the mission to rescue three workers who have been trapped underground at the lily mine for twelve days.
The workers are trapped in a metal container that dropped into a hole 80 metres deep when a pillar collapsed.
Since then, there have been multiple collapses and the ground has been described as extremely unstable.
The mine's spokesman Coetzee Zeitsman says, "We are waiting for the results of a meeting that is taking place between mine management and stakeholders. After this meeting, it will be reviewed what the way forward is and what are the next steps to be taken."
