KZN man mauled to death by sickly lioness
The lioness attacked the man while he and a colleague walked through the reserve.
JOHANNESBURG - Ezemvelo Wildlife, in KwaZulu- Natal, has confirmed a 45-year-old employee has been killed by a lioness at the reserve.
It's understood the lioness, believed to be suffering from tuberculosis, attacked the water attendant early yesterday morning while he and a colleague walked through the bush.
The man had been stationed at the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park for more than 16 years.
Spokesperson Musa Mntambo says, "He was attacked by a lioness that was sick. When it attacked him it was [approximately] four meters away from the route that he was walking on. When assistance came, he had succumbed to his injuries. He leaves behind his wife and two kids."
Meanwhile, Ezemvelo Wildlife has confirmed the lioness has been euthanized.
Mntambo says, "After the lion killed our colleague, we [put the lion down] as part of what we normally do when incidents of this nature happen."
