CAPE TOWN - Bidvest Wits brushed aside Lightstars FC 3-0 on Saturday in the Seychelles to begin their Confederations Cup in encouraging fashion.

The experienced Dillon Sheppard got the opener early on with Sibusizo Vilakazi doubling the lead midway through the first half.

Wits begun the second half 2-0 up and capped off a solid victory on the road with a third goal via Markus Lecki.

The return leg of the preliminary round will be the weekend of the 27th of February.

Ajax Cape Town also began their campaign with a quality 2-1 win on the road against Angolan side Segrada Esperanca.

After initially withdrawing from the competition citing safety reasons, Ajax made a u-turn on their decision midweek.

And they will no doubt be happy they did travel to Angola as Ruzaigh Gamieldien opened the scoring for the Urban Warriors.

However, the lead did not last long as the home side struck back meaning the teams were level at the break.

Soon after the second half got underway Riyaad Norodien grabbed a goal, which ultimately turned out to be the winner.

Ajax will carry a slender lead into the return leg as well as having scored the all important away goals.
