Kathrada: It's up to SA to walk in Mandela's footsteps
Yesterday, SA commemorated the 26th anniversary of Madiba’s release from jail.
JOHANNESBURG - Anti-apartheid stalwart and Rivonia trialist Ahmed Kathrada says the image of a triumphant Nelson Mandela walking out of the Victor Verster Prison more than two decades ago will forever remain etched in his mind.
Yesterday, hundreds of organisations and South Africans commemorated the 26th anniversary of Madiba's release from jail having served a 27-year sentence.
Kathrada says his comrade's release symbolised a victory over oppression and offered hope that apartheid was reaching its final days.
The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation's Zaakirah Vadi said, "Ahmed Kathrada's message today, on the anniversary of Mandela's release, is that it is up to us as South Africans, young and old, to continue walking in Mandela's footsteps as well as picking up where Mandela has left off."
