TAC welcomes legalisation of selling HIV home testing kits
The TAC says testing at home will allow more people to know their status & seek early treatment.
The kits can now be bought over the counter after the South African Pharmacy Association relaxed regulations prohibiting such sales.
The TAC says testing at home will allow more people to know their status and to seek early treatment.
The organisation's Marcus Louw said, "If you're HIV positive, you should start treatment as soon as possible. We used to think it was fine to wait until your immune system decline but we now know it's important to start sooner. Obviously if you want to start sooner, you need to know your status [because] you can't wait until you're sick and only test then."
The organisation says the country's biggest hurdle to HIV and Aids treatment is the massive number of infected people, but don't know they are living with the virus.
