Tim Noakes lambasted during hearing over dietary advice

In a tweet last year, Noakes advised a mother to wean her baby on a low carb/high fat diet.

CAPE TOWN - Professor Tim Noakes's advocacy of a low carb/high fat diet has been severely scrutinised at public hearings into his professional conduct in Cape Town.

The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) took up the matter after a complaint from the former president of the Association of Dietetics.

It is related to a tweet in which Noakes advised a mother to wean her baby on a low carb/high fat diet.

Noakes made notes frequently as expert witness professor Willem Pienaar testified.

Pienaar questioned Noakes's professionalism, by asking how the sport scientist could give advice on a social media platform without consultation.

The bioethicist went on to tell the hearing Noakes should have told the mother to see a doctor instead of encouraging her to wean her baby on a low carb/high fat diet.

Pienaar said Noakes did not know the baby's age or medical history at the time and warned his conduct was not good for the medical profession.
