Teen withdraws rape complaint against CT cop
Ipid says it will continue with the investigation despite the complainant withdrawing charges.
CAPE TOWN - A 13-year old girl has withdrawn a complaint of rape against a Cape Town police officer.
However, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) will continue its investigation.
Today, the officer was granted bail of a R1,000 when he appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court.
He had been accused of raping a 13-year old at a Camps Bay beach on New Year's Day.
Prosecutor Dail Andrews told the court that the girl's statement would still be used as evidence even though she withdrew it just hours after she laid the complaint at Mfuleni Police Station.
Ipid's Patrick Takanyi testified that the girl had told her parents about the alleged rape and a social worker at her school made her go to police on 21 January.
The police officer was arrested swiftly, but his accuser withdrew her statement on the same day, saying she had forgiven him.
