The warrant officer was part of a team tracking down a suspect wanted for crimes committed in Brits, in the North West.
It's believed the alleged criminal was attending the funeral of one of his alleged victims.
The officer managed to arrest the suspect during the funeral service at the Madibong Village this morning and screamed for assistance from his colleagues.
The police's Ronel Otto says mourners then mistook the officer for a criminal and shot at the detective.
“The provincial commissioner expressed his shock and disappointment at the behaviour of community members and appealed to community leaders to assist the police so suspects can be apprehended.”
