Woman waiting to be treated is raped at JHB hospital
A 59-year-old man, who was waiting to be discharged from the psychiatric ward, allegedly raped her.
JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu says an investigation is underway into a rape at the South Rand Hospital involving two patients.
A 59-year-old man, who was being discharged from the psychiatric ward and was waiting to be collected, allegedly raped a woman who was waiting to be treated at the emergency unit.
The woman was lying on a stretcher.
Police were called to the hospital yesterday after a patient witnessed the rape in the accident and emergency unit of the hospital.
Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu said, "He was readmitted and sent to Chris Hani Baragwaneth Hospital because he is not well. He is a psychiatry patient so we'll get the senior psychiatrists to evaluate him."
Officials will also be scrutinising CCTV footage from the hospital.
The Democratic Alliance's Jack Bloom says he had warned there was a problem with additional psychiatric patients who had been referred there.
"The problem is that you need a dedicated psychiatric ward with extra facility. In general, they shouldn't be mixed with ordinary patients, and unfortunately this incident has now happened at the South Rand Hospital. I hope they learn from it."
Mahlangu says they're looking into what exactly transpired.
"We are going to establish as to where security was, and everybody who works in the hospital? We are checking all of those, including security cameras."
