Mashaba: Successful business people should help resolve SA's challenges
The Black Like Me founder has been elected as the DA’s JHB mayoral candidate for the local elections.
Party leader Mmusi Maimane announced at the weekend that Mashaba, the founder of hair care company Black Like Me, would be the party's candidate to stand for mayor.
Maimane says Mashaba came out tops in a rigorous process and believes he will be able to secure the metro.
Mashaba begins his campaign for mayor today, with the local government elections months away.
Mashaba says his experience running successful businesses will come in handy as he's particularly concerned about addressing unemployment and corruption.
He says he thinks more successful people from the private sector should offer their wisdom to the public sector.
"Privileged South Africans like myself, I believe we're duty bound to really do something about this."
Maimane says Mashaba and the party will run its strongest grassroots level campaign and it confident the party will take over Johannesburg.
Meanwhile, Maimane says his party does not believe in rewarding career politicians and does not think Mashaba is out of his depth.
He says Mashaba's background in business will make him an invaluable asset for the party and he does not believe his past comments on BEE policy will disadvantage their cause.
Maimane says the party finds it difficult looking over people who've been in the party for a long time.
