Mbalula denies paying close to R500k for Mayweather's tour
Mbalula says DA's accusations aren’t true and he will answer to Parliament on the matter.
JOHANNESBURG - While the Democratic Alliance(DA) says it has proof that the Minister of Sports and Recreation Fikile Mbalula spent close to half a million rand on boxing champion Floyd Mayweather's South Africa tour, the ministry says it did not pay for the visit.
The DA's Solly Malatsi says Mbalula has lied to the South African public when he said he did not fund the boxing legend's trip in 2014.
Malatsi says the party is in possession of receipts that contradict the minister's claim and adds he did in fact spend just under R500,000.
"The proof we have is in the form of invoices that were from Frontiers Sport showcasing two payments of amounts of from the Department of Sports and Recreation to the company, specifically for the Floyd Mayweather's tour. This contracts every formal and public statements that previously made by the honourable Minister Fikile Mbalula."
However, Mbalula says the accusations aren't true and he will answer to Parliament on the matter.
"I did not use taxpayers' money to basically bring Floyd in the country and that is the truth I've stated from the onset. It is surprising that today Malatsi says he's got proof which I'm looking forward to."
