Vaal LGBTI community says intolerance is common in the area
The group says at least three women were raped in the past year, allegedly because of their sexuality.
JOHANNESBURG - The Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) community in the Vaal has condemned the murder of a 20-year-old woman in Everton north.
Motshidisi Pascalina 's body was found outside a local school in December.
The community insists she was raped and attacked because she was lesbian.
The LBGTI community in the Vaal says this is not the first time one of its members has been attacked.
The organisation says at least three women were raped in the past year, allegedly because of their sexuality.
Spokesperson Kegomodicoe Mocoancoeng says, "People around Vaal are not okay with lesbians and gays. The way that incident happened, the way that Motshidisi died, that all in all says that is a hate crime."
A memorandum for the Gauteng Community Safety MEC, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, has been handed over at the Mafatsana Police Station.
Police have confirmed that they are investigating a case of murder and hope community members will help them with possible leads.
Editor's note: We as EWN have decided to mention the victim's sexuality as it is alleged that it is directly linked to her attack and murder, and is thus an important fact in understanding this crime and the circumstances surrounding it.
