#FeesMustFall protests to hit Wits, UJ today
Students plan to protest the payment of registration fees at Wits and University of Johannesburg.
JOHANNESBURG - The #FeesMustFall protests toward free higher education will resume this morning at Wits and the University of Johannesburg (UJ), where students plan to protest the payment of registration fees.
Both universities say they're anticipating protests and occupation of parts of the campuses by students, but the registration process will continue.
Students have been mobilising support for the resumption of the #FeesMustFall movement throughout last week and will today hit the ground running with demonstrations.
Registration officially opens today and Wits spokesperson Shirona Patel says they expect visitors and prospective students on campus.
She says security has been heightened.
"We believe that this may disrupt some registration and other university activities. The safety of students, staff and prospective students remains paramount, obviously."
The protests are expected to start later this morning and are being led by local student representative bodies.
