JOHANNESBURG – Police have launched an internal investigation to determine whether there was any negligence on the part of officers when six suspects escaped from the Springs holding cells.

Two of the six suspects were re-arrested this week.

One of the men appeared in court yesterday while the second will take the stand on Monday.

The group were due to appear in the Springs Magistrate Court on various charges including murder, possession of drugs, theft of copper cables and malicious damage to property.

They allegedly overpowered a police officer at the cell before they took his keys and escaped.

The police's Lungelo Dlamini says they will also be charged with escaping from custody.

“The murder suspects were arrested in Tsakane and will be charged with escaping from custody.”
