'Marikana is not a no-go area for the ANC'
North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo says it’s a lie that the ANC is not welcome in Marikana.
JOHANNESBURG - North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo says it's a myth that Marikana is a no-go area for the African National Congress (ANC).
Mahumapelo and a delegation of the ANC's National Executive members are visiting the mining township this afternoon.
The ruling party says the rally is also to welcome Economic Freedom Fighters members who have decided to return to the ANC.
The North West premier says it's a lie that the ANC is not welcome in Marikana.
"We are here to demonstrate to all that Marikana is not a no-go area for the ANC."
Mahumapelo says the party has been doing work in the mining town and continues to improve people's lives.
"We are here to remind our people about the important work we have done here for service delivery and we are also here to tell them that there is more to do."
He has been joined by State Security Minister David Mahlobo and ANC Treasurer Zweli Mkhize who have welcomed some new members to the party.
The ANC leadership has told those gathered that the party is working to revitalise poverty stricken communities, especially mining towns.
