ANC bans journalist from birthday bash over tweet

CAPE TOWN - The African National Congress (ANC) has banned journalist Carien du Plessis from attending its 104th birthday celebrations on 8 January in Rustenburg.

Thousands of supporters are expected to converge on the Royal Bafokeng stadium on Saturday.

Du Plessis, who is already in town for the event, will however not be granted access due a tweet she sent out earlier today.

In the tweet, she seemingly labelled people who would be attending the birthday bash as 'pantypreneurs' and 'tenderpreneurs'.

Du Plessis apologised soon after the controversial tweet caused a storm online.

I realise the term "pantypreneur" is problematic. Thank you for the engagement and my unqualified apologies for using it in my tweet.

But ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa says the apology comes a little too late.

"Carien du Plessis described women who attend ANC events as pantypreneurs and that statement is racist because the majority of women who attend are black."

The ANC says du Plessis will also not be welcome at any other events hosted by the party this weekend.
