Was theft at State Security an inside job?
A reported R50 million in foreign currency was recently stolen from the agency’s headquarters.
JOHANNESBURG - Serious concerns have been raised after a robbery at the State Security Agency's (SSA) headquarters in Pretoria.
Jakkie Cilliers, from the Institute for Security Studies, says this incident is of serious concern.
"I think, without having any details about this, that this must be an inside job or with inside contacts. This tells us volumes about the ethics and lack of control that must be evident within the SSA. It is very concerning."
The Hawks are investigating the theft of the money between Christmas night and Boxing Day.
The agency had initially confirmed that money had been stolen but would not disclose the amount.
SSA's spokesperson Brian Dube said, "The Hawks are leading an investigation into the matter. We hope to make arrests soon, so that we can bring these people to book."
Hawks spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi says investigations into the case are at an early stage.
"That matter is still being probed. It's still early. A high level team is investigating the case."
