JOHANNESBURG - A police constable is on the run after he allegedly raped and assaulted his wife in Mabopane, north-west of Pretoria.

The officer apparently stabbed his wife several times last week after he suspected she was having an affair.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) says it's following up on leads and hopes to make an arrest soon.

Spokesperson Grace Langa says, "He choked and beat her using the house walls. We're investigating a charge of attempted murder, rape and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm."
