CAPE TOWN - Stellenbosch University has terminated the contract of a lecturer who admitted to sending a racist text message to a student.

'Open Stellenbosch' spokesperson Sikulile Duma received the racist text message from nuclear physics lecturer, Anton Stander, earlier this month.

The sociology student is said to have traced the anonymous text message using social media site, Facebook.

Stander has admitted to sending Duma an SMS that reads: "Jou swart moer van die wit boer".

Loosely transcribed, the message means: "You black bastard from a white farmer," according to the City Press.

The university's Martin Viljoen says they condemn the racist remark and have subsequently terminated Stander's contract.

"This is after Dr Stander admitted, at his own accord, that he had made the said remarks."

Stander has also asked the university to facilitate a private, mediated meeting with Duma as he wants to apologise to him unconditionally.

A week ago, Duma claimed that he also received a verbal threat against his family from the lecturer.

The student said since the creation of 'Open Stellenbosch' its members have been victimised.

He claimed the lecturer also left a threatening voice message from a private number.

"Basically it said, 'I am looking for a person, and then he stated my father's address' and then he dropped the phone."

Duma said his father lives abroad and is concerned about the recent racial attacks.
