CAPE TOWN - Stellenbosch University's blaze took onlookers and students by surprise at the weekend as they watched the Van der Sterr building deteriorate in flames.

The fire destroyed the third floor and caused significant damage to the second and first floors the day before some students were due to write a test in the building.

The building houses several divisions of the university's faculty of economics and management sciences.

A forensic investigation has been launched.
