'Dramatic' murders shake Stellenbosch estate
A couple & their son were found hacked to death at their luxury estate home in Stellenbosch.
CAPE TOWN - The management at the De Zalze Winelands Golf Estate outside Stellenbosch says it's horrified by the murder of three members of the same family.
A couple, who recently moved to South Africa from Australia, and their 22-year-old son were hacked to death at their home. Their bodies were found in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Their youngest son and 16-year-old daughter were wounded in the incident. The girl is now in a critical condition in hospital.
She underwent emergency surgery on Tuesday night.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the triple murder at the upmarket golf estate.
Emergency services confirmed the three people killed were hacked to death by an axe-wielding perpetrator.
The chairperson of the Homeowners Association, Eben Potgieter, says the estate has had security breaches in the past but this type of incident was a first.
"People have tried to break in, to come in and steal something. But it's isolated and there's been nothing like this. This is the most dramatic thing that's happened to us."
Potgieter says a neighbour's domestic worker saw one of the sons bleeding and on the phone, which triggered concern.
Paramedics arrived on the scene after receiving a call from the house just after 7am.
No arrests have been made but a man has been taken in for questioning.
