JOHANNESBURG - At least 200 people have been left destitute following a shack fire at the Kya Sands informal settlement in Northern Johannesburg.

Authorities say the blaze broke out in one of the shacks in the early hours of Sunday morning, destroying about 70 shacks.

The cause of the fire is not yet clear.

Johannesburg emergency service’s Robert Mulaudzi says, “About 70 shacks were destroyed. There were no injuries reported.”

Meanwhile, a ward councillor in the area has appealed to the public to provide the victims with some sort of aid.
