JOHANNESBURG - Former President Thabo Mbeki said he believes that Nelson Mandela's doctors will soon be sending the ailing statesman home to recuperate.

Mbeki was speaking at a Memorial Lecture for former African National Congress (ANC) President Zaccheus Mahabane on Saturday.

He said he knows Madiba's doctors, and they are doing an excellent job.

Mandela has been in the Pretoria Heart Hospital for over a month, where he is undergoing treatment for a recurring lung infection.

According to the Presidency's latest update, Mandela continues to respond to treatment but his condition remains critical.

Mandela's wife Graça Machel on Friday told the public that she feels less anxious about her husband's health than she did a week ago.
