JOHANNESBURG – At least 19 rhino have been poached in the Kruger National Park over the past week, the Department of Environmental Affairs revealed on Wednesday.

The department also released the latest rhino poaching statistics for 2013.

The number of rhino lost to poaching in South Africa stood at 313 since the beginning of the year.

At least 98 arrests were made over the same period.

Earlier this week, four suspected poachers were arrested in the Kruger National Park.

The number of rhino poached in the park stood at 229.

Department spokesperson Albi Modise said wildlife crime would always exist so long as there was a market for it.

He said the country should work together to tackle the issue.
