Petersen to replace injured Smith
Test opener Alviro Petersen has been chosen to replace Proteas stalwart Greame Smith.
CAPE TOWN - Alviro Petersen will replace the injured Graeme Smith in the Proteas squad for ICC Champions Trophy tournament in England.
Smith is out of the team following a recurring ankle injury that now requires surgery.
Cricket South Africa (CSA) convener of selectors Andrew Hudson said Petersen's experience makes him the best replacement.
“With the loss of Jacques Kallis and Greame Smith at the top of the order, the selectors felt like we needed some experience. Alviro played a wonderful test series in England, he knows the conditions because he plays for Somerset.”
Hudson said Petersen was the logical choice following Smith's withdrawal.
“We just feel like we wanted to swap like-for-like. We wanted to have an established opener to help us to lay good platforms to help us post big targets over in England.”
